Bobcat Bulletin

Text Box: Principal’s Message:
A couple weeks ago you might have noticed that 9 teachers and I were away for a two day seminar in Auburn. We joined about 100 other Rocklin Unified School District teachers and administrators and 300 staff members from other districts in Placer County to hear a dynamic presentation by Richard and Rebecca DuFour. The DuFours are proponents of improving student academic performance by developing Professional Learning Communities or PLC’s within our schools. More than 150 school districts throughout the country, 26 educational organizations including the Annenberg Institute for School Reform and the California Teachers Association, and 26 educational researchers endorse PLC’s as a way to achieve better results for all students by committing to devote our collaborative efforts to 3 key points:
What do we expect students to learn?
How will we know when they have learned it?
How will we respond when they don’t learn it?
These points may sound fundamental, but it’s the implementation of the process that is more complicated. During the months and years ahead all the school staffs in Rocklin will be committed to selecting essential skills to be learned for each subject matter, developing lessons aimed at those skills, formulating common assessments to measure mastery of the skills, and analyzing the data to guide further teaching. Like the DuFours and all the others that have embraced the PLC concept, we believe that the purpose of school is truly to ensure high levels of learning for all students. I look forward to keeping you informed as we embark upon this journey.

The Importance of Student Attendance

We would all agree that regular student attendance is essential to student learning and overall school success.  I clearly understand that good health contributes to student success in learning.  It is extremely important that parents ensure that students do not come to school when they are ill.  However, it is equally important for parents to ensure that students attend school at all other times.  Our district’s operating budget is dependent upon the funds we receive through student attendance.  Given the current realities of our State and District budgets, it is critical that we work together as a team to enhance all available school district revenue.  For your information, each day that a student does not attend school, whether the absence is considered “excused” or ‘unexcused,” the district loses $42 in school revenues.  Below is a data chart that shows the significant financial impact of lost ADA.  As you can see, our district loss in revenue from 2008-2009 was nearly $2,000,000.

Holidays and Furloughs

This year the President’s Day Holidays on February 15th and February 19th will sandwich 3 furlough days voluntarily taken by our teachers.  This means that there will be no school from February 15th-February 19th.

Crossing Street Safety

At just about every School Site Council meeting a parent member brings up the concern of children jay walking, usually with an adult.  Stories are told of just misses as children and adults jet out from between cars near the administration building and kindergarten rooms.  My concern is mainly for what children will do when adults are not with them.  Their safety is at stake when we tell them to do as we say rather than as we do.
